Sources are reporting that co-founders Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie will be replaced as co-chairmen of the board for BlackBerry. This is due to pressure from shareholders.

The replacement said to be the leading candidate to replace Balsillie and Lazaridis is Barbara Stymiest. She is an independent director who joined RIM’s board in 2007.

Board members have been examining RIM’s company structure, including the business necessity of having an independent chair rather than a lead director. The company has been governed by a lead director since 2007. This would cause a change in the structure of the company.

This anticipated announcement, of an independent director, is scheduled for delivery on or before Jan 31st.
