In the second quarter of 2012, 153.9 million smartphones were shipped to customers, and nearly a third of them were from Samsung. The results were detailed in a July 27 report from IDC.New Samsung smartphone

The maker of the popular Galaxy S III phone shipped 50.2 million smartphones last quarter, comprising 32.6 percent of the worldwide smartphone market. Samsung had nearly double the shipments of second-place Apple, which shipped 26 million iPhones, giving it 16.9 percent share.

Nokia, selling both its own Symbian operating system and Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 on smartphones, came in third with 6.6 percent market share, followed by HTC at 5.7 percent and China-based ZTE, a newcomer to the top five, at 5.2 percent.

ZTE’s success came from low-end smartphones sold in its home country of China, as well as expanding sales in the Americas under its own and other brand names. HTC saw some improvement from earlier quarters but its 8.8 million shipments were still down 24.1 percent from the 11.6 million shipped a year previously in 2011's second quarter.

Although third in the smartphone arena, Nokia managed a strong second place in mobile phone shipments as a whole. Samsung still came in first, shipping 97.8 units worldwide, or 24.1 percent of all mobile phones. Nokia shipped 83.7 million for 20.6 percent market share. Apple’s iPhone shipments put it in third place at 6.4 percent.

The top five were rounded out by ZTE at 4.4 percent market share and LG Electronics with 3.2 percent. LG’s shipments dropped 47.2 percent from the second quarter of the previous year.

While smartphones have made up two-thirds of cell phones shipped in recent months in the United States, the global market is still tipped toward less advanced (and cheaper) handsets. Of the 406 million mobile phones shipped in the second quarter of 2012, smartphones made up only 37.9 percent.

The trend does show smartphones gaining, however. While the total global mobile phone market grew only 1 percent year over year, the smartphone segment grew 42.1 percent in the same period.
