Apple Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain LionUpdated on May 16, 2012

While developers have had access to Apple's newest operating system, OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion, for a few months, the release to customers could come as early as June.

The new software mimics many of the features from the iPhone and iPad. Apps, iMessage, Reminders, and Notes that were introduced as part of iOS 5 will all be part of the new operating system. These desktop applications are then synced with their iPhone counterparts through iCloud services.

Mountain Lion introduces Gatekeeper, which lets you restrict all users of the machine to installing only applications from the Mac App Store or allow more freedom. It also introduces AirPlay Mirroring, allowing you to stream the contents of your Mac through an Apple TV onto an HDTV.

The release could coincide with new MacBook Pro and iMac models with Intel's latest Ivy Bridge processors.
