Acer Chairman J.T. Wang recently announced the company is set to reduce the full-year shipment target for tablets by more than 50 percent. The shipment target, which initially was set to range from 5 million to 7 million tablets, is now down to 2.5 million to 3 million.

Acer-Logo Wang stated in a shareholder meeting that the reduction is a contingency plan to help reduce inventory in the retail channel. He also added the company expects more stability in sales and believes Acer will sell 800,000 tablets in both the second and third quarter.

Last month, the company reported a 29.2 percent drop in revenue.

In this current economic climate should other tablet makers emulate Acer and scale their production schedule back? Perhaps Acer will start a domino effect.
