3D animated films may seem like the new craze within the past couple of years. We all love wearing our 3D glasses at the movie theaters, but if you take the real definition of 3D animation you will quickly discover 3D animated movies have been hitting the big screen for over a decade. The actual definition is; objects that appear in a three dimensional space and they rotate and move like real objects. With that being said let’s take a look at the top 3D animated movies of all time.

Toy Story 1995

Toy Story was the first 3D animated feature! This movie gave the world a whole new perspective on the movie industry. This movie wasn’t a cartoon, but it wasn’t real people either. It was… an in-between? This was the starting point of a whole new generation of animation. Although 3D movies in the present day are a lot more advanced than the 1995 Toy Story, you can’t right off the movie that started it all.

Shrek 2001 and all the Shrek movies for that matter!

All four of the Shrek movies never ceased to amaze us. The first Shrek movie won the first Oscar for a long animated feature.

Monsters Inc. 2001

This movie holds a special place in all of our hearts, I mean who can’t relate to monsters in the closet? On top of its incredible script, the animation in this movie was simply amazing. Sully’s fur looks so real. Am I right or am I right?

Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius (2001)

I understand this one may have you scratching your heads. Although it is not top 10 worthy the movie does come with a highly entertaining fact. This was the first and probably one of the few popular animated 3D films produced entirely on a desktop computer. It was made using Lightwavesoftware and can be purchased by anyone for $600 dollars.

Finding Nemo 2003

One of the nations all time favorites. This is the movie that finally passed Shrek as the most successful animated 3D movie ever. Who doesn’t adore that small fin?

Polar Express 2004

A movie that has truly come into our lives as a Christmas favorite. With an Oscar winning director, Robert Zemeckis, and one of Hollywood’s favorites, Tom Hanks, only adds to the phenomenal animation effects.

Madagascar 2005

This movie is just a feel good flick for the whole family. Dancing, singing, talking animals, enough said.

Lion King 3D 2011

An epic re-creation to an already set masterpiece. When I say re-creation I don’t mean a whole new movie. For those of you who haven’t seen it, it really is thrilling to see a 2D animation come to life in a 3 dimensional way.

Puss In Boots 2011

A clever tale of the cat from Shrek. This Spin off was a major hit and just proof that the 3D animation world is still alive and better as ever.

I have a feeling there is a lot more 3D animation movies in our near future, but these will forever go down in history as legends.
