Google has announced that it's acquired Motorolas Mobility division, the creators of popular Android devices such as the Droid X. There were several motivators in this decision, including the fact that Motorola has been committed to Android since 2008. This however does not mean that Googles Nexus line of phones will be taken over by the new division, as the Senior Vice President of Mobile at Google Andy Rubin has made clear, so it will still be available to other Android licensees.

In a press release, Google CEO Larry Page stated that companies like Microsoft and Apple are banding together in patent attacks on Android. With Motorola Mobilitys patent portfolio, Google can better protect Android from these attacks. Larry Page is also quoted as saying "The combination of Google and Motorola will not only supercharge Android, but will also enhance competition..."
