Google released the source code for Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS), after keeping Honeycomb all to themselves. ICS is the unity of the 2.x smartphone branch and the Android Honeycomb tablet branch. This makes tablet applications compatible with smaller mobile devices.

Ice Cream Sandwich is a powerhouse operating system. Some of the amazing tasks it can complete are the following;

  • Ability to unlock phones via facial detection and Android Beam
  • A near field communications app that lets users share Web pages and documents by tapping two ICS-based phones together

ICS is powering the Samsung Galaxy Nexus smartphone, which is the first ICS phone. The Galaxy Nexus has a 4.65 inch display, powered by a 1.2GHz processor and runs on 4G LTE. The phone is expected for release on November 21, in the U.S. on the Verizon network.

When installing ICS, it is a large code and it will take a while. Please make sure it is complete before you sync, or you will get a broken code.
