The biggest conference in gaming has come to an end. E3 2012 brought game enthusiasts lots of excitement and entertainment last week, but the doors closed Thursday evening. Don’t worry, though. If there is one thing E3 does right, it’s letting gamers know their favorite games are coming soon!
Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo kicked off E3 by showcasing the products and games customers can expect to see in the next year. Microsoft introduced its Smartglass technology, along with gameplay of the highly anticipated “Halo 4” and “Call of Duty Black Ops II”. Sony highlighted its cross-platform play with the PS3 and Vita; introduced “Wonderbook”, a connected, interactive book that lets children and families interact with literature on the PS3; and showed off new games like “The Last of Us” and “God of War Ascension”. Nintendo concluded the Big 3 conferences with several demonstrations of its new console, the WiiU, and its abilities.

E3 brought many well-loved franchises back, as well as debuting potentially fantastic new ones. The question for gamers now is how much each franchise has changed, and what those differences will mean for gameplay. For example, “Halo 4” introduces Spartan Ops, “Far Cry 3” includes a 4-player Co-Op, “Pikmin 3” features a Rock Pikmin, and “Assassin’s Creed III”, now set during the American Revolution, incorporates naval warfare.
The introduction of new franchises excited gamers everywhere. Some promising new games include: “The Last of Us”, a post-apocalyptic action game with non-scripted artificial intelligence that reacts based on the current situation and status of the environment, and “Star Wars 1313”, where players can take control of a bounty hunter with stunning visuals and immersive gameplay. “Watch Dogs”, too, has become a hot topic with its unique gameplay features. Players can view any character’s personal information and hack any device.
If you’re a mobile gaming fan and wondering what’s coming next on your iOS or Android device, rest assured that there are many advances in mobile gaming on the horizon. If you missed information on your favorite games during E3, G4Tv.com, E3.com, IGN.com, Gamespot.com and many more gaming websites have all the exciting information you’re craving.
The yearly Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) is back for another exciting week of the newest video game products and technologies. From Tuesday, June 5, until Thursday, June 7, thousands of gaming industry professionals will all gather at the Los Angeles Convention Center in California. Although the event is closed to the public, there’s coverage on Spike TV, G4TV, and many gaming sites such as IGN or Gamespot.
E3 brings hundreds of developers and companies to show off their goods on a variety of platforms: Xbox, PlayStation, Wii, Mobile, PC, etc. Some of these companies include: Activision, Bethesda, Capcom, Microsoft, Nintendo, Sony, Ubisoft, Zynga, and much more. These companies will showcase themselves on the showroom floor with a plethora of booths to visit and giant displays, while the upstairs contains meeting rooms to talk business.
Some of the most anticipated games will show off what they have in store for the eagerly awaiting fans. IGN.com lists all the “known” games to be there, such as Call of Duty Black Ops II, Halo 4, Pikmin 3, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, and Crysis 3. Although these big titles are sure to pack a punch, let’s not forget about the growing mobile market with games to appear such as: Raystorm, Guardian Cross, Motley Blocks, SolaRola, and much more.
But before E3 starts, there are the major press conferences that will take place. Konami, Microsoft, EA, Ubisoft, Sony, and Nintendo will bring out the big guns to show the best they have to offer. Microsoft will start off the big three on Monday, June 4, at 12:30pm EDT. Sony will air later that night at 9PM (EA and Ubisoft in between), with Nintendo holding their press conference on Tuesday, June 5, at 12:00 noon EDT. Don’t miss your chance to learn what 2012 has in store for your gaming needs!
With the decreased video game sales in 2011 and the end of the console lifecycle coming soon, many are skeptical about the year 2012. They shouldn’t be; a bright future is ahead for gamers. For example, the May release of Diablo 3, a sequel that was highly anticipated for 10+ years, on the same day as Max Payne 3’s release, came with sales that hit the roof.
Before Diablo 3 was released, Blizzard already had over 2 million pre-orders from customers. They’ll sell even more copies in upcoming days. Another successful console and computer game, Mass Effect 3, passed $200 million in sales in just a few months. These games are only the beginning of what’s to come in 2012. Other anticipated games that are sure to sell in high numbers are: Halo 4, Assassin’s Creed III, Guild Wars 2, Borderlands 2, and CoD: Black Ops II.
The ever-expanding mobile application market is also a factor. With constant improvements on smartphone, tablets, and other devices, mobile games and apps have had a huge impact on the gaming industry. Tablets and smartphones, whether Android or iOS, have flooded the market. The increased variety and super cheap cost of available apps allows a plethora of apps to be purchased every day.
Just look at the success of everyone’s favorite app, Angry Birds. Rovio’s newest app, Angry Birds Space, got over 10 million downloads in just three days. The original game has been downloaded over 700 million times.
Constantly evolving gaming technology ensures that video games will always have a place in our lives. As newer generations of consoles and phones make their way to market, the creativity of the games we play will continue to grow. As for now, 2012 looks to be a solid year for the video game industry.
Hey guys, my name is Phil Bonnier and I’m a new intern at Zco Corporation. Over this past weekend, April 6th – April 8th, I was at PAX East 2012. PAX East is a video game convention held yearly in Boston, MA. Besides the thousands of attendees that show up every year, there are plenty of booths, panels, concerts, and excitement there as well. Hundreds of publishers and developers setup booths in the expo hall to show off what they have to offer. Many of these booths are dedicated to new games being released, different computer products, or just selling video game related gifts. At many of these booths, free stuff is given away. This is known as SWAG, “stuff we all get.” ☺
Besides the excitement of receiving free things, many booths held raffles that give away huge prizes (some are full gaming computers) and mini competitions to win even more prizes. During each day, there were different panels throughout that one could attend. This weekend included panels like “Rooster Teeth”, “ X-Play: Live Show Taping ”, “So You Want to Get into the Game Industry? ”, and “Pitch Your Game Idea!”, just to name a few. These panels fill up quickly, and lines are started well before the panel’s show time.
One of the most fun aspects of the show is the freedom to walk around the convention center. If one gets tired of walking around or watching panels, they could relax in the “Free to Play” room, “Bring Your PC” room, or PAX’s Arcade room. These are places one could join hundreds of others to relax and game.
Finally, at the end of Friday and Saturday night, concerts began at 8:30PM and went until 2AM. Friday night showcased bands such as, Supercommuter, Minibosses, Metroid Metal, and Protomen. Saturday showcased: Video Game Orchestra, Paul and Storm, Jonathan Coulton, and MC Frontalot. These concerts were packed full with exciting fans that erupted with excitement and energy!
I have attended PAX East for the past three years and overall, it stays true to its fans and will continue to be one of the best conventions to experience. Below are some great photos from the show taken by a friend of mine, James Rosseel.
